Why you should never buy a playmat on Temu or AliExpress

By Mats & Joy® Reading time: 4 min.

Are you scrolling through Temu or AliExpress and seeing a playmat for half the price of a certified mat? We understand the temptation. But before you click 'order', you'll want to know this.

This is not a marketing story. These are facts from scientific and government research.

What's in it?

Phthalates, Lead & Cadmium — In Plain Language

Phthalates are plasticizers added to plastic to make it pliable — such as in the anti-slip backing of a playmat. They are linked to endocrine disruption, obesity, fertility problems, and cancer.

Lead is a heavy metal sometimes found in cheap paint and inks. Even in small amounts, it affects the brains of young children. The WHO states that there is no safe amount of lead for children. None at all.

Cadmium is a heavy metal used as a colorant in cheap plastic. It accumulates in the kidneys and liver and is carcinogenic according to international health organizations.

⚠️

Seoul investigated 93 products — almost half failed the safety checks. This is a pattern, not an incident.

"Your child lies on that mat. Every day. They crawl on it, put their face on it, put their hands in their mouth. What's in it, they breathe it in — day after day."

But it's textile, right?

Many parents think: foam or plastic, I understand that — but surely textile is safe? Not if the ink is not certified.

The danger is not only in foam or plastic mats. It is also in the inks used to print textile mats. Cheap platforms use inks without certification, without traceability, without any control over what is in them.

  • Colors that fade or bleed after one washUncertified dyes dissolve upon contact with water
  • Print that looks different from the photoNo production control = inconsistent output
  • Seams that come undone after a few weeksNo quality control on finishing
  • Chemicals released into the fibers upon skin contactNo EN71 test for chemical migration

The standard that matters

What Does EN71 Mean?

EN71 is the mandatory European safety standard for all children's products intended for children under 14 years of age. Without EN71, a product may not be legally sold as a children's product in the EU. It is not an optional certification — it is the law.

⚗️

Heavy metals

Tests for migration of lead, cadmium, mercury, and 15 other toxic elements

🧪

Phthalates

Strict limits on endocrine-disrupting plasticizers in plastic components

🔥

Flammability

Tests combustion behavior of all materials — must not ignite quickly or release toxic smoke

🧬

Chemical migration

What is released from the material upon skin contact — crucial for products children lie on

The CE marking is legal proof that a product has been tested and complies with all European safety requirements. Without CE, a product may not enter the European market. A product without EN71 and CE has not been tested. Period.

Before you buy

3 Things To Check For Any Playmat

01

EN71 + CE present?

Not present or not verifiable? Do not buy. This is the absolute minimum requirement for any children's product in the EU.

02

Phthalate-free backing?

Definitely check if there is PVC or plastic in the anti-slip. Ask for the test report if in doubt.

03

Where produced?

The shorter the production chain, the more control over what is in it. Belgian design and printing = full traceability.

Choose Certain. Choose Certified.
